Although most of us associate spring time fields of brightly colored tulips with the windmills of Holland the flowers origins as a cultivated flower can be traced back to the days of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey and Northern Africa. By most accounts the tulip did not find its way to the Netherlands until the mid 1550’s and from there it was spread around the world.
There are countless varieties of tulips in almost every color of the rainbow with the most notable exception being true blue. Much like roses the meanings associated with tulips changes depending on the color of the flower. Red is often associated with love, yellow with friendship, and white with forgiveness. Unlike the rose the tulip is not a bold flower. Its true hallmark is a simple understated elegance that is perfect for any occasion.
Tomorrow marks the the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere, and in just a few days tulip festivals will start all around the world. Tulip festivals can be found from Holland to our own neck of the woods here in Washington. Featuring dancing, parades, music, art, and of course tulips. The festivals have become a springtime tradition for many families. The growing season for tulips will vary by your location, so be sure to check with your local listings for information on the festivals in your area.
