Bridal bouquets have changed dramatically over the years. The earliest bouquets contained herbs such as dill, sage, rosemary and even garlic. The various herbs were intended increase, lust, fertility, wisdom, and to ward off evil. Some cultures would even fashion garlands of herbs for the bride and groom to wear on their wedding day. Over the years edible flowers began to make there way in to the bouquets. Eventually flowers completely replaced the use of herbs in a bridal bouquet.
Taking cues from the past while moving forward with the changing seasons and the often fickle world of fashion the modern bridal bouquet is as varied as the modern bride. Cultural traditions and customs are still being observed, but often with a modern outlook. The towering cascades of flowers from past that would often obscure the bride have scaled down, so that they now highlight the bride instead of hiding her. Simple gatherings of spring flowers have been refined to accentuate their elegance without loosing their simplicity.
