What we now know as Memorial day was born in the aftermath of the Civil War to honor those who died on both sides of the conflict. It was during this time that the tradition of laying flowers on the graves of the fallen started. In more recent times Memorial Day has come to serve as a day not only to remember those who died during the Civil War, but as a day to remember all of the men and women who gave their lives in service of our country.
Today more people take the day honor their friends, family and loved ones who have passed away. This is not to say that those who have served are being forgotten. In fact this year as in years past the 3rd U.S. Infantry will place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery.
This Memorial Day let us help you to honor those who gave there lives in service of our country and those who are no longer with us.
